Vincent Van Gogh
Let's not forget that the little
emotions are the great captains of
our lives and we obey them without
But are not this struggle and even
the mistakes one may make better,
and do they not develop us more,
than if we kept systematically away
One may have a blazing hearth in
one's soul and yet no one ever come
to sit by it. Passers-by see only
a wisp of smoke from the chimney
and continue on the way.
But I always think that the best
way to know God is to love many
When I have a terrible need of -
shall I say the word -
religion. Then I go out and paint
There may be a great fire in our
soul, yet no one ever comes to warm
himself at it, and the passers-by
see only a wisp of smoke.
I often think that the night is
more alive and more richly colored
than the day.
It always strikes me, and it is
very peculiar, that when we see the
image of indescribable and
unutterable desolation - of
loneliness, of poverty and misery,
the end of all things, or their
extreme - then rises in our mind
the thought of God.
If you truly love Nature, you will
find beauty everywhere.
